OSTEOPATHY WAS FOUNDED BY DR A.T STILL MD
He opened the first school at Kirksville Missouri in 1892 and graduated his students as Doctors of Osteopathy. US qualified Osteopaths have full practice rights as physicians whereas in other countries Osteopaths are confined to manual therapy.Osteopathy is a non-invasive manual therapy that helps overcome the effects of past injury and stress that may contribute to pain, ill health and disease processes. Injuries may affect the function of muscles nerves ligaments and joints whereby Osteopaths use a wide range of techniques to overcome tensions that reduce the individual’s ability to function on a daily basis. By correcting musculoskeletal dysfunction the body’s innate ability to restore balance (homoeostasis) is achieved. As the musculoskeletal system supports all other body systems ensuring it is functional at optimal levels is an obvious advantage to achieving health. Osteopaths are trained as primary health practitioners in their ability to assess and diagnose disease processes. Where conditions are outside their skill level they will refer the patient to their medical practitioner for further assessment. The techniques used by Osteopaths according to their college curriculum and to postgraduate training courses they are required to attend each year. These methods ensure all significant areas of the body are able to be treated effectively. They may include spinal and joint manipulation, myofascial release techniques, cranial osteopathy, and Visceral Manipulation..
